MOUNT Gibson Iron Limited and the Geraldton Port Authority have signed a contract to export 1.5 million tonnes of iron ore from the Geraldton Port to China. Under the arrangement, between Mount Gibson’s wholly owned subsidiary Geraldton Bulk Handling Pty Ltd and the port, the company will be responsible for unloading the rail wagons, transferring the iron ore to storage facilities to be constructed by GBH and the loading of iron products through existing ship loading facilities. CATERING firm Jiffy Foods has undergone a rapid expansion after just four months under new management. The Welshpool-based business says it is pursuing growth and, under new managing director John Barnett, has signed a number of important deals for its wholesale operations. While the company’s public face is its bread-and-butter service – delivering meals to worksites and offices around the metropolitan area – it also provides prepared food for a number of retail organisations. PERTH-BASED Centurion Transport has won what is believed to be one of the largest logistics contracts ever awarded in WA. The 32-year-old family business has secured a five-year $90 million contract as lead logistics carrier for the Rio Tinto group of companies. But while the deal is good news for Centurion, it is feared many smaller transport operators based in the north west of the State will suffer.

EIGHT presentation staff in the WA studios of WIN Television have fallen victim to the depressed advertising market and the technological advances of digital television. Presentation staff are responsible for monitoring the signal from the transmitter to viewers. The eight staff have been informed their positions are being made redundant from October 6 and that all of WIN’s presentation will be centralised in Wollongong, NSW.

Gas deal boost for Esperance water plan
THE signing this month of an 18-year contract for Burns and Roe Worley to supply gas-fired power to Esperance has strengthened the attraction of a proposal by United Utilities Australia to pump desalinated seawater from Esperance to the Goldfields. Following the power go ahead, United Utilities Australia has described its plan as “a highly viable project” and is confident of progressing through the decision process. Full report, Page 15.
