Seven Western Australian companies have been acknowledged for their role in developing an innovative and prosperous local food industry with the awarding of grants under the state government's WA Food Industry Development Fund.

The seven grant recipients have developed projects totalling $1.6 million, and the government will contribute $500,000 towards the projects.
Eric Ripper, in his capacity as Deputy Premier, said that the agri-food sector was a critical part of the WA economy and had the potential to expand into new areas and create even more jobs in the state.
"One of the ways the government is helping to develop the sector is by actively encouraging local companies to innovate through programs such as the WA Food Industry Development Fund," he said.
The grant recipients are:
D'Orsogna (Palmyra)
To conduct experiments on shoulder ham product to match the flavour profile which is attractive in the Korean market and investigate the best methods of transport and preservation for the product so that it stays attractive to consumers when it reaches the Korean market.
D Trandos and Sons (Neerabup)
To establish and develop an innovative new microwavable corn cobbette tray for local and export markets utilising new husking technology and efficient packing and distribution methods.
Margaret River Nuts and Cereals (Margaret River/Busselton)
Introduction of muesli products (cereals and bars) on the market with core WA ingredients distinguishing it from all other competitive products.
Fremantle Octopus (O'Connor)
Manufacture of new product lines of processed octopus to add to already successful marinated varieties, being Raw Butterflied, Blanched Japanese/Asian style, steamed ready to eat, and smoked.
Fresh Food Industries (Jandakot)
Creation of Bake Stable Fruit Pieces - a dried fruit product will be diced and packed for use as a nutritious bake stable fruit inclusion for further manufacturing purposes throughout the food industry.
Billabong Brewing (Myaree)
A project for the development, production and marketing of a range of beer styles suitable for the consumption by persons suffering from gluten intolerance and coeliac's disease, into State (WA), national and, potentially, international markets.
Pacco Group (O'Connor)
The implementation of enhanced packaging facilities to increase the quality of pre packaged products in both the local and international arena.

Innovative food companies win State Government support.
Deputy Premier Eric Ripper today announced the seven Western Australian companies whose cutting edge projects had qualified for grants under the
WA Food Industry Development Fund.
Mr Ripper made the announcement at the WA Food Industry Breakfast Seminar in Perth, which was attended by about 150 food industry representatives from across the State.
He told the gathering that the Carpenter Government was committed to developing a robust economy with more diverse and sophisticated industry sectors.
"The agri-food sector is a critical part of the WA economy and has the potential to expand into new areas and create even more jobs for Western Australians," the Deputy Premier said.

Announcing the seven grant recipients, Mr Ripper said the fund would provide $500,000 towards $1.6million worth of innovative projects.
The grant recipients are D'Orsogna (Palmyra); D Trandos and Sons (Neerabup); Margaret River Nuts and Cereals (Margaret River/Busselton); Fremantle Octopus (O'Connor); Fresh Food Industries (Jandakot); Billabong Brewing (Myaree); and
Pacco Group (O'Connor).
"I would like to congratulate these companies and acknowledge the role they will continue to play in making the WA food industry even more innovative and prosperous in the years ahead," Mr Ripper said.
