The Bickley-Carmel Valley wine industry’s efforts to boost tourist numbers have been assisted by the opening of luxury accommodation in the area.
While luxury day spas and other high-end retreats have been flourishing in Western Australia’s principal wine region, Margaret River, the Perth Hills is an area better known for its bed and breakfast culture.
The Bickley-Carmel Valley took its first step into the upper end of the tourist market about six years ago, when the Hidden Valley Eco Spa Lodges and Day Spa opened its doors.
The retreat is located in the middle of a six-hectare jarrah forest and owned by husband and wife, David and Melissa Simpson.
“We came to the hills because it was close enough to Perth and we were looking for this unique forest setting, and the wineries next door complement us as well,” Mrs Simpson told Business Class.
The Simpsons moved to Perth from New Zealand 20 years ago.
They operated a wrecking yard and mechanical workshop before getting in to the spa retreat business, which is Mrs Simpson’s specialty.
The Simpsons started their first day spa in a self-contained unit in Kalamunda before settling in their current premises in Pickering Brook, a couple of kilometres from the Bickley-Carmel Valley wine trail.
“We have been busy from the day we started and now people have to book several months in advance if they want to come over on weekends,” Mrs Simpson said.
The retreat recently extended the treatment room facilities from one to four.
The complex now includes four five-star lodges, each with its private spa, barbecue, and views of the forest.
There are plans for an additional lodge to be opened in a couple of months.
Hidden Valley offers a range treatments, including aromatherapy massages, Swedish massages, oil treatment and even a chocolate indulgence treatment, which involves exfoliation with chocolate and almond scrub.
Another high-end accommodation spot in the Bickley and Carmel Valley is the Brookside Bed and Breakfast, which changed owners two months ago.
The facility is currently being revamped by the new owners, Peter and Faye Fels, who are hoping to re-open the modernised single studio in April.
The studio, which has an exclusive feel to it, is separate from the main house and has its own decking area overlooking the stunning gardens and swimming pool.
The property also has a vineyard and a cellar door.
