KING Street’s Mezzonine has closed its doors. It’s understood the owners of the popular cafe restaurant were locked out last Friday. An email from owner Jim Stephen to customers stated: “It is with great sadness and a huge sense of dreams unfulfilled that I must inform you that Mezzonine ceased trading on Friday 18th of January at 10am. Lynda Quinn and I thank you sincerely for your support.”
Stay tuned.

The next month or so will be a busy time for for Don Hancey. Gusto has heard of three separate events linked to this celebrity chef. The most notable, however, is the organisation of a regular farmers’ market, which provides consumers direct access to growers and processors of food in the South West. The markets have been set up by the Margaret River Regional Producers’ Associations (of which Mr Hancey is a member) and therefore are available to its 120 members.
“We have so many terrific foods and beverages here in the South West that they deserve to be consumed when they’re at their best,” Don says. “The markets encourage farmers and speciality producers to get straight to their customers and find niche markets. They also help small operators who are just starting out.”
The first market will be held on Sunday February 3 at the old hospital site in the Margaret River township. Don will be at Margaret River’s Howard Park winery this weekend. He will be preparing lobster – a lot of it. We’re told there will be lobster rolls, lobster bisque in shooter glasses, and whole lobster to go. These treats will be accompanied by Howard Park’s range of chardonnay.
And where else will Don be? He’ll head to Gingin for the Olive Festival at the beginning of March.

Swapping Miss Maud’s Fremantle kitchen for the US submarine the USS Portsmouth was the sacrifice Miss Maud’s head chef William Reedy has made this week. As part of the Catering Institute’s chef exchange program he has traded aprons with US navy chef Joshum Bartley. William will be giving the US sailors some Swedish delights of the culinary kind. He will be cooking up a traditional Swedish potato and anchovy dish as well as the Freo classic, fish and chips. Joshum is the equivalent of a head chef, although the US navy terms him a “mess specialist”. Perhaps it is the Fremantle kitchen that got the raw deal? The USS Portsmouth will be docked at Fremantle until Sunday.

The secret is out – C does a $25 business lunch comprising a glass of wine and either a whole crayfish or chargrilled beef fillet with salad and the all-important glass of wine. These dishes are available on the business lunch menu until February 1.
