Gt Southern’s $280m spend
Government and private proponents are spending almost $280 million in Western Australia’s Great Southern region, according to an up-date produced by the Great Southern Development Commission.
At the top of the list is Cooperative Bulk Handling’s $90 million upgrade of its Albany facility.
Some of those works include the relocation of the rail corridor to the northern side of the terminal site, construction of a new rail discharge facility, and the building of new vertical silos to create more storage.
Work is due to start in August.
The next largest project under way is Kingopen Pty Ltd’s $55 million Brooks Garden Development – a lifestyle village, neighbourhood shopping centre, showroom and service station in Albany.
Another residential development in the top four of projects in terms of value is the Royal Australian Air-force Association’s $17 million Amity Village.
Some stages of that development, which when complete will comprise of 107 retirement village homes for over 55s, have already been completed. The development will also include associated amenities such as clubrooms, a workshop and an indoor heated pool.
The WA Police Service and the Department of Justice has also embarked on the $20 million Albany Justice and Police Complex including new courtrooms, a lockup facility and new police station.
Devaugh Construction has been awarded the main construction contract and work has commenced.
There is also the $12.7 million Albany Water Front project by the Great Southern Development Commission, City of Albany, the Department of Planning and Infrastructure and the Department of Transport and Regional Services.
The Princess Royal Harbour works will provide a small boat harbour, pens and repair facilities for tourist, recreational and fishing vessels.
The largest project away from Albany is the Department of Health’s $7.5 million Denmark Health Facility. This project involves rebuilding the current facility on a new site. It is in the planning and document preparation stage.
GSDC senior development officer Duane Schouten said the commission produced the project update list to keep the community informed.
He said the commission had also played a role in getting two of the projects off the ground.
“With two of the projects we formed a working group to look at the environmental, planning and infrastructure issues and discuss them,” Mr Schouten said.
“That helped to streamline the process for them and cut through the red tape. We also encourage the proponents to look locally for their labour.”
