Griffin Energy and the Boddington Gold Mine Joint Venture Owners today announced finalisation of the agreement for Griffin to provide the energy for the $1.8 billion Boddington Gold Mine project.
The selection of Griffin Energy follows a competitive tender process for the supply of approximately 150 MW of power under a long term power purchase agreement with BGM.
The power will be sourced from Griffin Energy's 208 MW Bluewaters Power Station, which is currently under construction in Collie.
Griffin Energy Executive General Manager Power Generation, Wayne Trumble, said a formal power purchase contract has been finalised between all parties.
"We are pleased to have won the tender, not only to supply such an important project as Boddington, but also as it demonstrates the competitive and capable characteristics Griffin's coal based electricity offers," Mr Trumble said.
"This contract is further justification of our decision to proceed with the Bluewaters Power Station,," he said.
BGM Project Director Tom McCulley, said that the Boddington Gold Mine will be one of the largest gold mining projects in WA and one of the largest single electrical loads on the South West Interconnected System.
"BGM completed a rigorous tender evaluation process and critical to this was the requirement to maintain our project schedule and provide long term security of energy costs to our project. Griffin was able to guarantee this whereas gas fired alternatives provided less security of supply," he said.
With construction of Bluewaters now commenced, electricity production is expected to commence in early 2008.
