A State Government proposal for affordable employee housing in Broome could accommodate more than 60 workers in a mix of single and shared accommodation units located on a one-hectare site close to the town centre.
Broome is in the midst of a rental crisis with the cost of renting a basic three-bedroom house believed to be as high as $1,000/week.
Planning and infrastructure minister Alannah MacTiernan said she had invited the Broome Shire and local businesses to consider the proposal at a meeting in Broome on Sunday.
Under the proposal, the state government would provide land to Foundation Housing, a not-for-profit accommodation company, who would then build and lease the houses to local businesses at affordable rates.
"Every time I visit Broome, businesses have told me about their challenges in finding affordable accommodation for their staff, and this idea could really help solve that problem," Ms MacTiernan said.
"I have looked at various possible sites around the town and believe that reserve land on Kerr Street would provide an ideal opportunity.
"The meeting on Sunday will look at the proposal and also discuss possible arrangements for businesses to become involved in the project and secure accommodation for their workers."
The Minister said all business operators and indeed interested employees were welcome to attend and discuss the proposals.
The meeting will be held at the Broome Shire offices at 11am on Sunday, December 16.
