Edith Cowan University (ECU) has won Federal Government funding to run an Australian Government Summer School for Teachers program to boost teacher education in WA.
Announced today by the Federal Minister for Education, Julie Bishop, the aim of the program is to create a national pool of highly accomplished teachers equipped to share their knowledge and skills with peers.
The 10 day residential Literacy and Numeracy Summer School will be conducted at ECU in January 2008 and will provide the opportunity for 75 specially selected, leading literacy and numeracy teachers to further develop their knowledge and skills.
ECU will partner with the University of Wollongong and the University of New England to run the nation-wide Literacy and Numeracy Summer School program.
"As WA's leading provider of teachers we are glad to support their further development," said Professor Greg Robson, Head of ECU's School of Education.
"This program will provide WA's leading teachers with enhanced skills and abilities, and ultimately, our students and schools will benefit," he said.
A number of leading international and national speakers in the fields of literacy and numeracy will participate in the program and modules on leadership for advanced educators will also be included.
Participating teachers will have opportunities to continue networking with each other, share their expertise and skills with colleagues in their schools and engage in a school-based project aimed at increasing effectiveness and expertise at the school level.
The Australian Government Summer Schools for Teachers program is a four year initiative which aims to support 1000 teachers per year to develop their skills in one of five priority areas: literacy and numeracy; English; mathematics; science and Australian history.
As part of the program teachers who successfully complete the course will be paid a bonus of $5000 as additional recognition of their enhanced skills
