Georgiou Group has been selected to upgrade Australian Marine Complex’s vessel transfer path, the first of four contracts at the Henderson facility worth a cumulative $88 million.

Those works, which form part of the state’s $5.5 billion recovery plan, will allow the AMC to support larger, more complex vessels that are expected to enter service in the coming decade.

Other upgrades include a new shipbuilding facility, wharf extension and updates to three road intersections.

Lanskey Constructions will build the shipbuilding facility.

Defence Issues Minister Paul Papalia said the improvements would enhance the AMC’s reputation as a defence industry hub.

“The projects align with the Western Australian Defence and Defence Industries Strategic Plan, which aims to double the value of the Department of Defence’s annual contribution to the state from $3 [billion] to $6 billion by 2030,” he said.

Upgrades to the AMC come at the same time as the state government has lobbied furiously to receive full-cycle docking of Australia’s six Collins-class submarines, which is currently undertaken in South Australia.

The federal government has yet to disclose whether it will move the work to WA or keep it in SA.
