Gamblers lose $11,000m

GAMBLING businesses took more than $11,000 million in 1997-98, according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, representing an increase of 42 per cent since 1994-95.

Most of the takings came from poker and other gaming machines accounting for 58 per cent of the total net takings from gambling.

Assuming an Australian adult population of just more than 14 million, each Australian lost about $790, 35 per cent more than in 1994-95.
