THE festival season is upon us again, bringing a fresh buzz of activity to the city. Most of WA’s major event programs have been launched in recent weeks, with some of the highlights to watch for in coming months including…. Youth will be celebrated in the Perth CBD when the AWESOME International Arts Festival for Bright Young Things kicks off tomorrow. AWESOME Arts Australia Ltd director Jenny Simpson (see Culture Corner, page 31) has put together a quirky and fun family event that features interstate and international artists. And it is mostly free! The festival concludes on November 25. For further details visit www.awesomearts.com Also launching this week is the Fremantle Festival, with a big grand opening planned. There are three different events scheduled – the Lotterywest street parade, a carnivale and a Bollywood street party – all of which promise to awake the culture and arts savvy port city. The week-long multicultural festival features interactive activities for children and adults. For further details visit www.fremantlefestivals.com An more edgy approach to this summer’s festivities is the Alphabet City Artrage Festival. The festival started last weekend and is poised to keep the streets of Northbridge alive until December 1. The Bakery Artrage Complex on James Street, Roe Street’s Ice Cream factory, the Toy Shop and a newly imported shipping container venue, SoCo Cargo, will be hosting events, concerts and exhibitions. PIAF’s new artistic director, Shelagh Magadza, has compiled an eclectic selection including Cape Verdean diva Cesaria Evora, French street theatre, and the popular Opera in Park, which this year will feature the classic Madame Butterfly.
