The City of Perth has given its approval to four new city developments, including an eight-level office building at the Playhouse Theatre site, a luxury hotel at heritage-listed St George's House and a 19-storey mixed use development at the Carlton Hotel.
Under plans submitted to the council, the $40 million new tower at the Carlton Hotel would contain 59 hotel rooms and 81 dwellings, while the heritage listed hotel would remain as a café/restaurant and bar.
At the Playhouse Theatre, on Pier Street, the Anglican Diocese of Perth has proposed a $25 million, eight-storey office tower with a gallery space and an upper plaza containing two cafes and the potential for alfresco dining.
The Anglican church has also proposed to construct a two-storey 'Song School' between the office building and the old Deanery.
The project was designed by Pallassis Architects.
Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the proposal would bring new and diversified uses to the precinct.
"They should also complement the development of Cathedral Heritage Precinct which is scheduled to take place in the next few years," Ms Scaffidi said.
"Developments such as this are part of the changing scene in Perth and demonstrate how modern architecture can sit side by side with heritage buildings, such as St George's Cathedral and the Deanery."
At St Georges House, plans submitted to Perth City Council would convert the heritage-listed building, currently being used for offices, into a luxury 15-suite hotel.
Seven of the suites would be in the existing building in the $1.5 million plan.
"The Council believes the retention, conservation and adaptive re-use of the existing building typifies how our heritage buildings can be transformed whilst maintaining their integrity," Ms Scaffidi said.
Also, a $7.6 million nine-level apartment development designed by Baltinas Architects at 31 Mount Street has been approved.
The proposed development will contain 23 dwellings and a ground floor café fronting Mount Street.
