A COMPANY that has diverted 8,000 tonnes of waste from landfill a year by recycling plastic plant pots has won two categories and received a special commendation in the WA Environment Awards.
Pot Recyclers has turned an estimated 100 million polypropylene plant pots each year into products such as garden rakes and crates and has set up 30 recycling points in garden nurseries.
It won the Resources and Waste Management category and the Promoting Behaviour Change category and gained a special commendation for environmental and social innovation.
Other award winners include:
• Men of the Trees in the Community Achievement category;
• Wesfarmers Premier Coal in the Corporate Business Leading by Example category;
• Shire of Mt Marshall in the Government Leading by Example category;
• Random Valley Organic Wines in the Small Business Leading by example category; and
• Bunbury Senior High School in the Coastal and Marine category.
Besides Pot Recyclers, the other special commendation winners were Town of Northam, BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Dr Peter Dingle, Sons of Gwalia, Harvey Irrigation Systems Project Team, Rotary, St John of God Healthcare Subiaco, Senevens, Greening Australia and Ikea.
