The State Government announced it has established a peak consultative group, the Women's Advisory Network of Western Australia (WANWA).
Women's Interests Minister Sue Ellery said the network had been created to assist State policy and decision making on matters affecting women.
"The establishment of WANWA following a review of the former Women's Advisory Council shows the Government's continued commitment to give WA women a powerful voice and keep women's issues on the agenda," Ms Ellery said.
"The network's structure offers an even stronger model for community consultation and engagement through its diverse membership who represent a wide range of different peak organisations and women's groups."
Fourteen women have been selected as WANWA members, including:
- Olga Ramasamy AM (Australian Asian Association of WA);
- Marcia Kuhne (Chamber of Commerce and Industry);
- Margaret Ker (Council of Churches of WA);
- Shameema Kolia (Ethnic Communities Council WA);
- Sandra Norman (Gay and Lesbian Community Services of WA);
- Helen McNeair (Indigenous Women's Congress);
- Judith Parker AM (National Council of Women WA);
- Laura Money (National Union of Students);
- Mary Anne Bath (People with Disabilities);
- Donna Marie Fahie (Rural Remote and Regional Women's Network WA);
- Roslyn Harley (UnionsWA);
- Angela Hartwig (Women's Council for Domestic & Family Violence);
- Kate Davis (Community Legal Centres Association of WA); and
- Irina Cattalini (WA Council of Social Services).
Ms Ellery said the network would help the State Government with its priorities for women including: economic independence, safety and justice, leadership and governance, and gender equality.
"The network, to be chaired by Angela Hartwig, will represent the views of many women from different backgrounds on specific issues affecting women in the community," she said.
"I expect network members to consult widely with their organisation's stakeholders to help identify these issues.
"I see WANWA as playing an important role in having the voices of WA women heard and I'm looking forward to working with them as a vital source of information, consultation and advice."
