Perth’s freeways could be home to electronic billboards, with the state government set to trial the advertising from next year.
Eight pre-selected sites on the Kwinana and Mitchell freeways will host the billboards, with advertising content to be controlled by Main Roads.
The government has called for design and construction proposals for trials to be held for a period of two years, with the option of an additional five-year extension.
Transport Minister Troy Buswell said the sites had been carefully selected to avoid interchanges and merging sections so that drivers were not distracted.
“The revenue raised from the advertising component of this project will be allocated to new traffic congestion and safety improvement programs that will benefit WA road users,” Mr Buswell said.
“The community is calling for more traffic congestion measures and this project will provide additional funding towards managing the growing issue of congestion in the metropolitan area.”
The signage is expected to be installed by mid-2014 subject to successful bidders receiving all necessary approvals.
