THE disastrous start to the winter grain season could cut Western Australia’s wheat harvest by five million tonnes or more. WA is the biggest grain producing state, responsible for about a third of Australia’s wheat, but experienced its driest June on record. "We are very concerned about what’s happening in WA because over the last 10 years it’s been the backbone of the wheat industry," Grain Council of Australia chief operating officer David Ginns said. The window for planting is now closed, with many producers dry sowing crops, hoping for rain.
