Major road upgrades will take place on Wanneroo Road between Wallawa Street and Joondalup Drive in Ashby and Tapping in Perth's northern suburbs.
Transport Minister Simon O'Brien today announced a dual carriageway would be built on the section of Wanneroo Road, with a new two-lane carriageway to be built to the west of the existing road.
Mr O'Brien said Downer EDi Works had been awarded a $9.45million contract to carry out the works. The new carriageway would carry northbound traffic while the existing road would be rehabilitated to carry southbound traffic.
"These works will improve traffic flow and road safety for all road users over this busy section of Wanneroo Road," Mr O'Brien said.
"The project includes on and off-road cycling facilities and will improve pedestrian access to bus services and help drivers access adjacent residential areas."
The contract is scheduled to commence next month and will be carried out over two construction seasons (summers).
Works from north of Ashley Road to Joondalup Drive are expected to be completed by April 2009 while the balance of the works between Ashley Road and Wallawa Street are due for completion by May 2010.
The project will be managed by Main Roads Western Australia's Metropolitan Region.
