Determination overcomes all

Discovering what she loved doing and “going out and doing it” has helped Maria-Jane Satterthwaite to develop a thriving training business here in Perth.

Not even being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis slowed her down. In fact, it has spurred her on to build her business.

“I have MS. It does not have me,” Ms Satterthwaite said.

“And I had to find financial independence.”

Her company Satterthwaite Consulting is the only company which currently provides the Federal Government’s Certificate II in Hospitality Practices totally on the client’s premises.

“When we go in and provide a traineeship to the client it becomes the client’s traineeship,” Ms Satterthwaite said.

“I had to listen to what clients wanted rather than what I thought would make me a millionaire.”

The company also runs a six-day short course for managers in the hospitality industry.

Ms Satterthwaite said her company’s clientele had pretty much doubled every month since March.

She started the business 12 months before — creating the training manuals used in her courses.

Ms Satterthwaite also took part in the Women In Business Mentoring Program.

“I’d studied Law and Commerce at university but that was absolutely no help in starting my own business,” she said.

“There is no substitute for life experience. I went into the mentoring program as a total sponge. I knew I needed help.”

Ms Satterthwaite has had about nine years in the hospitality industry from “working in the public bar” through to being the general manager of the converted Arnott’s Biscuit Factory Hotel.

“I felt well trained staff were the key to a successful hospitality business,” she said. “And I felt I was good at training them.”

Ms Satterthwaite said she was on the brink of buying a college on St Georges Terrace last year but pulled out in the eleventh hour.

“The changing face of training caused me to pull out. That and the rent factor,” she said.
