A COLT by the great Danehill should break the WA yearling record at the Magic Millions sale says Magic Millions managing director Murray Tillett.
A COLT by the great Danehill should break the WA yearling record at the Magic Millions sale says Magic Millions managing director Murray Tillett.
WA Bloodhorse Breeders Associa-tion executive officer Veronica Jackson-Smith agreed the Danehill colt would be a show-stopper.
She said Thundergulch progeny also looked promising, as did that of Jacks Or Better.
“Jacks Or Better has almost reached the $1 million mark in winnings,” she said.
“Other highlights of the sale include the progeny of leading sires Old Spice and Serheed.
“A full brother to 1998 Perth Derby winner Hot Jules will also be there.”
Durham Lodge is excited about offering its first yearling by successful sire Scenic, a colt called Mystic Image.
Goodwood Bloodstock Agency general manager Jeremy Smith said Scenic was known as a consistent sire.
“Scenic’s progeny had an outstanding 1998-99 season. He finished third on the Australian Sires Premiership for earnings behind Danehill and Zabeel and is currently ranked fourth for the 1999-2000 season,” Mr Smith said.
“Scenic’s efforts have put the WA breeding industry back in the national spotlight.”
Durham Lodge proprietor David Smith purchased Scenic in 1998 from the late Colin Hayes and Robert Sangster.
“He has resisted numerous offers to sell Scenic back to the Eastern States saying “how could you ever replace a horse of this quality?” Jeremy Smith commented.
“David had given some serious consideration to standing him in Sydney where we have been guaranteed a full book and a service fee of $20,000 – double his WA service fee – but has decided to continue to stand Scenic in WA.
“He disliked the fact he would have to move Durham Lodge’s whole operation – including thirty broodmares – with him,” he said.
Durham Lodge has set Scenic’s service fee for the 2000 season at $10,000 plus GST.
“Scenic has received support from all top breeders and covered mares sent from interstate,” Mr Smith said.
“His 1999 book was closed in June last year and he covered 120 mares.”
The first full crop of yearlings by Scenic will be offered for sale next year.
Other Durham Lodge offerings at this year’s Magic Millions sale include yearlings by Snippets, Danzero and Rubiton Palace Music.
