Councillors given $10,000 extra
COUNCILLORS have voted to give themselves $10,000 extra allowance on top of the $6,000 they receive for attending meetings.

Lord Mayor Peter Nattrass will also be given the $10,000 allowance along with the local government allowance of up to $60,000 he can receive.

The allowance will replace council’s reimbursement of expenses system. Previously, councillors could claim expenses incurred in their council duties to a maximum of $10,000. Now that sum is paid up front in the form of an allowance.

Allowable expenses include costs of travelling to council meetings, rental charges incurred by a member in relation to one telephone and one facsimile machine and child care costs incurred due to attendance at a council or committee of council meeting.
