The Perth City Council will decide tonight whether to go ahead with a proposal to open some of the city's major roads, including Hay Street and Murray Street, to two-way traffic.
The proposal consists of five stages to change the traffic flow, with stage one to open William and Beaufort streets between Roe St and Newcastle St to two-way traffic in 2009/10.
The Esplanade will also be changed between Barrack and William Streets as part of stage one.
Other changes in later stages include opening Hay St, Murray St, the rest of Barrack St and part of Riverside Drive, and in East Perth changing Wittenoom, Hill and Lord Streets.
All changes are scheduled to be completed in 2013/14 should the proposal go ahead.
The council will tonight consider the changes, investigate funding options and budget requirements.
The council will also consider the establishment of a working group that will consist of officers from the council, Main Roads, Department of Planning and Infrastructure, the Public Transport Authority and neighbouring councils.
Last year, William St between Wellington St and St Georges Terrace was opened to two way traffic as part of a trial for the overall plan.
