Cortec Systems Pty Ltd has been awarded a $1.17 million Australian Government R&D Start Grant.
The West Perth-based telecommunications software developer plans to use the funds to assist in the development of technologies that enhance Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
The grant follows a $6 million venture capital investment from Technology Venture Partners, Foundation Capital and Starfish Ventures.
Cortec also won the innovation category at the 2004 Western Australia Information Technology and Telecommunications Awards.
Launched as a joint venture with the listed intellectual property commercialisation company QPSX, Cortec Systems was formed in September 2000 to commercialise technology developed at the Australian Telecommunications Cooperative Research Centre, based at the WA Telecommunications Research Institute.
It has spent the past four years developing its technology, which addresses two of the major barriers to the adoption of VoIP technology, including quality of service and the expertise required to establish a VoIP network.
Targetted at commercial customers, Cortec’s flagship product Freeway also automates network operations that otherwise would require particular staff expertise.
The company plans to use the R&D Start Grant to enable the technology to be used by telco carriers and Internet service providers.
