Western Australian Governor Ken Michael approved the appointment today which takes effect on Friday, November 28 for a term of five years.
Mr Conran's previous roles included Secretary to Cabinet and Head of the Cabinet Policy Unit, in the office of former Prime Minister John Howard.
The former director general for DPC, Mal Wauchope, has been appointed to the new position of public sector commissioner following a restructure of the department.

Western Australian Governor Ken Michael has today approved the appointment of Peter Conran to the position of Director General of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.
Mr Conran's appointment takes effect on Friday, November 28 for a term of five years.
His appointment was recommended by the Commissioner for Public Sector Standards, following an independent recruitment and selection process for the role. The process undertaken by the commissioner included a national job advertisement and formal interview process which identified Mr Conran as the leading candidate.
Most recently, Mr Conran has been a Director Operations at Concept Economics - a role he will relinquish when he takes up the position of Director General. He has more than 30 years' experience in senior positions within State and Federal public sectors.
He previously held chief executive and senior roles at the Department of Law and the Department of the Chief Minister, both in the Northern Territory, and the acting Deputy Director General of the former Ministry of the Premier and Cabinet, WA. Mr Conran worked as the Secretary to Cabinet and Head of the Cabinet Policy Unit, in the office of former Prime Minister John Howard.
Mr Conran had been admitted as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory and a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland.
The former Director General for DPC, Mr Mal Wauchope, has been appointed to the new position of Public Sector Commissioner.
