Conference to highlight the case for safety

Strategies to make workplaces safer by managing risks will be promoted through the 2006 Occupational Safety and Health Conference, Delivering Outcomes: A Case for Safety.
The conference, to be held in Perth next Monday and Tuesday by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy (CME), will provide a forum for international, national and local speakers to share their experiences in applying risk management methods to lift the safety performance of the workplace.
Delivering Outcomes: A Case for Safety is particularly timely for the Western Australian resources sector, according to CME chief executive Tim Shanahan.
"There is the need to improve how we do risk management to ensure better safety outcomes in the WA resources sector, so that our workers can return home well and retire healthy," Mr Shanahan explained.
"The industry is strongly advocating the need for a new regulatory model which formalises the requirement for robust risk management. This will require companies to demonstrate they are aware of their hazards and have controls in place to manage them effectively," he said.
"We are looking to reduce the number and consequence of major accidents and significantly improve general safety for the workforce," Mr Shanahan said.
