THE City of Cockburn's planning division has won three awards in three categories at the Planning Institute of Australia's Western Australian awards for planning excellence.
The city's Phoenix Revitalisation Strategy received the state president's award and a certificate of commendation, while the town's online planning system received an award for excellence.
The strategy is a 10-year framework for the Phoenix town centre, including the surrounding suburbs of Spearwood and Hamilton Hill, which focuses on the creation of a central community hub.
The hub comprises the establishment of a cafe strip among residential developments, improvements to Rockingham Road and a life-learning centre.
City of Cockburn director of planning and development, Daniel Arndt, said the revitalisation strategy was designed to give the area a complete overhaul through new community facilities, housing and parks.
The online planning system allows developers and landowners to track the progress of their development applications in real time.
The system, known as Masterview, provides specific information, such as application status and progress, relevant application documents and property zoning and attributes.
Also included in the system is a tool called MasterPlan Enquirer, which advises if activities are permitted on a property, and also supplies information on development controls.
Mr Arndt said receiving the awards was a boost for the city's planning division.
“These awards recognise Cockburn's commitment to innovative development that is suitable and beneficial to the area, while also acknowledging we are doing our best to make life simple and more convenient for people wanting to lodge a development application within the city," he said.
