The state government has invited the community to comment on a masterplan for turning the former railway marshalling yards at Leighton into a major public parkland and beach recreation resource for Western Australia.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the parklands would cover 13ha from the intersection of Curtin Avenue and Marine Parade to Tydeman Road and from the passenger train tracks to the high water mark.
"The Government has committed more than $3 million to implement the first stage of the Leighton Oceanside Parklands Landscape Masterplan," Ms MacTiernan said.
"This will improve the area between the coastal urban village, currently being developed by LandCorp, and the beach.
"As well as rehabilitation of natural vegetation, facilities and amenities including beach picnic areas, grassed terraces, playgrounds, pathways and lighting will be provided.
"Later stages include the extension and relocation of Curtin Avenue adjacent to the railway reserve and Port Beach Road becoming a local road, making access to the beach safer.
"The Montessori Beehive school site and the McCall Centre, which includes the former cable station building, are outside the masterplan area and will retain their existing uses."
The masterplan was developed by the WA Planning Commission working with the local community and the three local governments affected, Cottesloe, Mosman Park and Fremantle.
Submissions on the masterplan close on Monday, November 13.
Staged implementation will begin following a review of submissions and approval of the final masterplan.
