A team of 20 police recruits from China have started a 12-week training course at the WA Police Academy in Joondalup.
WA Police Academy principal Superintendent Alf Fordham said China was one of Western Australia’s major trading partners and the presence of the Chinese police added to the usual export mix of resources and agriculture.
“And it helps the relationship between China and WA become multi-dimensional,” Supt Fordham said.
“From a WA Police Service perspective it is excellent that delegates from Jinan have come to WA and seen things they like.
“It validates the WA police and how we do things, and gives us credibility.”
Areas of WA police operations of interest to the Chinese are decision making on an executive level, response to violent crime, and forensic management of crime scenes.
“The 12-week corporate overview will look at how we respond, our techniques, equipment, methods and practices,” Supt Fordham said.
“And we are also exploring the opportunity for WA police to go there.”
Although the amount China was paying for the training was not disclosed, Supt Fordham said “it was negotiated at a reasonable market rate”.
