Carpenter signals theraputic cloning bill

Premier Alan Carpenter has signalled the introduction of complementary State-based legislation, after the Federal Parliament last night cleared the way for therapeutic cloning.

Mr Carpenter said the passing of the Federal legislation - via a conscience vote - would help stimulate vital medical research in Australia.

"Australia and Western Australia are already world leaders in scientific research and this move will keep us at the forefront of the industry," he said.

"The fact that we have two Nobel Prize winning medical researchers from WA reinforces this case.

"The next step will be to see what form of complementary legislation we require in WA and prepare to debate it in the State Parliament next year.

"Part of this process will involve consulting my caucus colleagues, with a view to allowing a conscience vote on any such legislation.

"I would urge all members of the Western Australian Parliament to think hard about this issue."
