Carpark rebuild comes a step closer

THE redevelopment of council’s Number 8 Car Park on Lake Street is a step closer to becoming a reality. Council voted to adopt its business plan for the redevelopment of the car park.

The redevelopment will include a 475 bay car park, retail tenancies on the James Street frontage and the construction of a 300 seat Imax Theatre on the Lake Street frontage.

A staff note to council said a significant amount of detail remained to be resolved with developer Multiplex.

Council will keep monies from the car park gained during construction.

It has been keen to have the car park redeveloped for many years. The Number 8 car park is considered vital to Northbridge.

In 1995 council entered into an agreement with Project Tourism Australia to redevelop the car park and turn it into a three-star hotel.

That proposal, also included a large public car park, was kept alive until 1997. It eventually fell over due to difficulties in finding funds for it to proceed.
