COMO Hotels and Resorts will operate a $300 million project at The Carter Building in Melbourne, signalling its second Australian hotel venture after Perth’s COMO The Treasury.
A decade after making its debut in Perth, international hospitality company COMO Hotels and Resorts will make its second Australian hotel venture by operating a $300 million project at The Carter Building in Melbourne.
Perth’s five-star hotel COMO The Treasury formed a part of Adrian Fini’s redevelopment of the Old Treasury Buildings.
Singapore-based COMO’s latest Australian venture will entail a 5-star luxury hotel, 54 residences and wellness and dining facilities.
COMO will take up the first nine levels of developer Orchard Piper’s The Carter Building with 102 hotel rooms and a Shambhala wellness centre similar to that in Perth’s The Treasury.
A restaurant, café, bar, function room, fitness centre and 20-metre indoor lap pool will also be on offer.
“Melbourne is a city celebrated for its design, food and culture, making it the ideal destination for COMO Hotels and Resorts,” COMO chief executive Olivier Jolivet said.
“We look forward to bringing COMO’s signature hospitality, culinary innovation and holistic approach to wellbeing to the city through this landmark development.”
KHA Studio, also known as Kerry Hill Architects with offices in Singapore and Fremantle, designed both the Perth and Melbourne projects.
"Partnering with COMO aligns perfectly with our vision to deliver a hotel that redefines Melbourne’s hospitality landscape,” Orchard Piper director Luke McKie said.
“Melbourne has seen an influx of new hotels in recent years, but few are in truly great locations.
“This property is perfectly situated for the city’s major events and will mark a return to a more understated and timeless luxury experience, one that’s not influenced by the latest trends.
“COMO has a market-leading reputation earned over decades of consistent delivery and is known the world over for its expertise in nurturing mind-body wellness, world-class cuisine and exacting service.”
The east coast site will open on St Kilda Road in early 2028 after construction began in August.
Family-owned COMO was founded in 1991, and its portfolio spans 18 hotels, resorts and private islands around the world.

Its Cathedral Avenue location in Perth features 48 rooms and suites, ranking 13th on Business News’ list of the WA’s hotels and resorts.
The list is ranked by stars and then by total number of rooms.
COMO The Treasury has won a raft of state and national awards, including the state’s Best Accommodation Hotel Award in the Australian Hotels Association Perth Airport WA Accommodation Awards 2023.
