Work on the next stage of the Forrest Place redevelopment has been scaled back temporarily due to next year's Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the original plans for Forrest Place were drawn up before it was decided CHOGM would be held in Perth next October, and could not be completed in time.
Under the revised plans, demolition of the existing stage and water feature will proceed, as will repaving along the Forrest Chase edge of Forrest Place and the construction of a new entertainment stage.
However, reconstruction of the main central sunken area and construction of a new water feature will be put on hold until after CHOGM.
"The Council has since considered how much of the work could be carried out prior to October and has adjusted the program accordingly," Ms Scaffidi said.
"However, Perth people can rest assured that their favourite meeting place will still have a fresh, new look in 2011.
"In the meantime, retailers and the general public will have some welcome respite from the disruption that necessarily accompanies a major public redevelopment such as this.
