Transport Minister Troy Buswell has announced Highway Construction Pty Ltd as the preferred proponent to widen the Kwinana Freeway between Leach and Roe Highways.
Mr Buswell said the $58 million project would enhance road user safety, reduce travel times and improve transport efficiency.
"Kwinana Freeway is a major link to the Perth CBD, the northern suburbs via Mitchell Freeway and the Fremantle port," Mr Buswell said.
"Improving freeway capacity will have a flow on benefit to these links."
Mr Buswell said in addition to widening the freeway, the project would also resurface the on/off ramps between the Leach and Roe highways as well as install barriers to mitigate traffic noise.
"The Gillard Government is committed to working with the Liberal-National Government to deliver this upgrade as quickly as possible," Mr Albanese said.
"The project will help reduce congestion along the freeway, delivering faster, safer and less frustrating driving conditions for the 107,000 motorists who use it every day - a figure that's expected to climb to 131,000 by 2031."
The Federal and State governments are funding the project on a 50:50 basis with the work expected to be completed in early 2012.
