Perth's newest skyscraper, Brookfield Place, has been named Australian development of the year by the Property Council of Australia.

Perth's newest skyscraper, Brookfield Place, has been named Australian development of the year by the Property Council of Australia.

The 45-level premium-grade office tower, which was completed in 2012, also bagged awards for best office development and best heritage development.

Brookfield Multiplex last year put the value of the design and construction contract for the tower at $US805 million.

Resources giant BHP Billiton takes up about 75 per cent of the tower's 86,000 square metres net lettable area, with other tenants including PwC, Deutsche Bank and Barrick Gold.

A spokesperson for the Property Council said the fact that 100 per cent of the office tower was pre-leased 12 months ahead of practical completion was testament to its quality.

"Brookfield Place Perth is not only an exciting addition to the Perth city skyline but also demonstrates how a leading-edge contemporary design can transform an unloved heritage area - one that had been described as an 'ugly hole in the ground' - into a spectacular new space for people," the spokesperson said.

Brookfield Place was the only Western Australian development recognised in the awards.

Brisbane's tallest residential development, Meriton Group's Soleil apartment project, was named best residential development while Leighton Properties and Devine Limited's Hamilton Harbour in Queensland was named best mixed-use development.

Brookfield is set to open a second, smaller tower alongside Brookfield Place next year.

The 16-level Brookfield Place Tower 2 will add a further 34,000sqm of premium space to Perth's commercial office mix.
