Sotheby's will auction the Aboriginal art collection belonging to bankrupt Perth lawyer Rohan Skea on October 5.
The collection consists of 130 pieces, collectively valued at approximately $400,000. Sotheby’s was appointed to auction the art by Mr Skea’s receivers.
Sotheby’s managing director Mark Fraser said about one third of the art Sotheby’s sold was Aboriginal art, and that a lot of buyers were internat-ional.
“This should give a lot of comfort to investors, and I can only see growth in the market,” he said.
“Aboriginal art has produced vast capital gains in the last few years, which astute investors are aiming for, particularly WA artist from the Kimberley area.”
Sotheby’s Aboriginal art specialist Tim Kingender said Aboriginal art from the State’s North West had achieved academic and curatorial acclaim in recent years and values had risen sharply at auction.
