BHP axes over 2000 WA jobs

BHP Billiton has today announced plans to cut 2100 jobs in Western Australia as it suspends operations at its Ravensthorpe nickel mine indefinitely and scales back production at its Mt Keith nickel mine on the back of a falling metal price.

Is BHP serious that the number crunching and hence the decision to fire 2000 employees and contractors was taken in one morning! I think it reflects the arrogance of companies like BHP to think the ordinary person on the street is that dumb to believe such statements.

Should be quite a few V8 utes and jet skis for sale over the next few weeks going cheap eh! More concerning is the vast amount of taxpayer funded infrastructure put in to support this mine. We are all paying for the new school that won't have any kiddies in it now.
