Australia has missed out on the 2022 Soccer World Cup after polling just 1 vote in the first secret ballot at a FIFA meeting in Zurich overnight.
For the first time in 44 years, FIFA awarded the hosting rights for two World Cups on the same day.
Russia will host the 2018 event and Qatar defeated the United States for the right to hold the 2022 event.
Under FIFA's rules Australia can not bid for the event again until 2026.
Australian Football Federation President Frank Lowy told the ABC he was bitterly disappointed by the decision.
"We have done our best," he said.
"I know that we could not have done anything better.
"The bid was very credible and the behaviour of our team was fantastic.
"I am proud of that but I would have liked to have delivered a 2022 World Cup.
The three year bidding process cost $45 million.
