The Australian sharemarket closed higher today, with the All Ordinaries index closing up 15 points at 4560 led by the banks and financial stocks.

The Australian sharemarket closed higher today, with the All Ordinaries index closing up 15 points at 4560 led by the banks and financial stocks.

"The fall in oil prices to below $57 a barrel caused oil shares to come off while industrials were up," Hogan and Partners client advisor Bill Williams said.

"Miners were down due to the increased mining costs despite metal prices being up."

"There was good turnover in Telstra on the back of retail buying, while WA shares were mixed with Wesfarmers ending up for the day due to a combination of the market being up and backed by their investor briefing yesterday."

Woodside was down 27 cents to $31.98 while LionOre Mining was up 10 cents to $6.00 and Aquarius Platinum fell 18 cents to $10.60.
