The estimated 18 per cent rise in seat capacity compared with last season will result from larger aircraft being utilised and new or increased routes by carriers.
Australian Airlines will introduce twice-weekly services to Bali, Garuda Airlines has introduced services to Jakarta and increased its service to Bali, Air New Zealand will offer daily services from Perth from the start of November, Valuair will offer daily flights to Singapore, while Singapore Airlines will further increase its services to Singapore.
Emirates has announced a doubling of services to Perth from October 2005, and plans are being finalised to build a new Emirates business lounge in the international terminal.
Westralia Airports Corporation is upgrading the international terminal to provide an additional 2500 square metres of floor space, and Perth Airport acting CEO Richard Gates said the growth highlighted confidence in the market travelling to and from WA.
“It is an exciting time for Western Australia as demand from overseas travellers results in increased seating capacity,” he said.
“It is excellent news for Western Australians, providing more opportunity to travel.
“It is especially good news for the tourism industry, which has suffered from the impacts of SARS and the war in Iraq.
“The terminal upgrade will include new check-in counters, an automatic baggage handling system, and a high technology baggage security system.”
Passenger numbers through both the domestic and international passenger terminals are at record numbers, with international passenger numbers up 9.5 per cent compared with the same quarter last year, and domestic passenger numbers up 15.5 per cent.
