West Kalgoorlie-based AVKO Mining Pty Ltd has been named 2007 Telstra Western Australian Business of the Year, and will represent the State in the national awards, to be presented later this year.

Christine Holgate, Executive Director of Telstra Sales and Channels, awarded AVKO Mining Pty Ltd at the black tie presentation held at the Hyatt Regency in Perth.
AVKO Mining was established in 1993 and specialises in all aspects of underground mining, in particular shaft sinking, bulk sample excavations and ground support. AVKO Mining currently has operations in Western Australia, Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales and recently excavated a significant ore pass in Papua New Guinea.
AVKO Mining also provides labour and machinery hire services to mine sites around Australia, and encourages hands-on training of student engineers, introducing a work experience training program for students to enhance their skills and knowledge of underground mining.
AVKO Mining also won the Hudson Business Award, which recognises businesses with more than 50 but less than or equal to 100 employees.
Successful category award winners in the 2007 Telstra Western Australian Business Awards were:
Australian Government Micro-Business Award (for businesses with five employees or fewer);
Business software specialist, Ebiz Solutions, from Eaton;
MYOB Business Award (for businesses with more than five but less than or equal to 20 employees);
Integrated marketing consultancy, Market Creations Pty Ltd, from Geraldton;
Panasonic Australia Business Award (for businesses with more than 20 employees but less than or equal to 50);
Calibration services laboratory, Australian Pressure Testing Services, from Henderson;
Hudson Business Award (for businesses with more than 50 employees but less than or equal to 100);
Mining company, AVKO Mining Pty Ltd, from West Kalgoorlie; and,
AMP Innovation Award (for businesses that have recently introduced an innovative product, service or process);
Remote radiology clinic, Imaging the South, from Bunbury.
Telstra Group Managing Director for Telstra Business and Telstra Business Awards Ambassador, Ms Deena Shiff, said Telstra was proud of all of this year's Western Australian winners and finalists.
"These Awards give Australian businesses the recognition they deserve and we are honoured each year to celebrate the achievements of Western Australia's business community," Ms Shiff said.

Western Australian award winners will now compete against other state and territory winners at the national titles held in Sydney on Friday, 21 September 2007, where one business will be crowned the 2007 Telstra Australian Business of the Year. In addition, all state/territory category winners have the opportunity to win the national title for their category.
