$65m to build WA's biggest cancer centre

The Carpenter government will spend $65 million expanding the state's major cancer centre at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital with architectural firm Hassell awarded the stage two contract.

The expanded centre will bring all cancer services offered at the hospital under one roof.

"The expanded centre will be seven times the size of the existing stage one Cancer Centre which opened in 2006," Health Minister Jim McGinty said.

"The new building will be built alongside the existing facility to create the largest cancer centre in the state.

"The centre will treat 4,000 patients each year.

The $65 million expansion of part of the government's $450 million investment to redevelop the hospital and $126 million contribution towards the creation of a $360 million research precinct - both at the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre in Nedlands.
