The state government has used $17.8 million from stage two of the federal government's Nation Building Economic Stimulus package to build 50 new affordable homes in Mirrabooka, Housing Minister Troy Buswell said today.
Mr Buswell said the state government had purchased the new units in Mirrabooka using $17.8 million from Stage 2 of the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Package.
The Mirrabooka development, which included 44 single-bedroom homes and 16 two-bedroom homes, would be built in four complexes on Chesterfield Road (divided by Ashbury Crescent) on 5,935sqm of land, by developers Mont Cape Pty Ltd.
The minister said the project was funded by the state and federal governments, supported by local government and developed and built by the private sector.
"The Social Housing Taskforce recommended greater collaboration between the Government and private sector and this acquisition is a good example of that," he said.
There are currently 899 homes planned for the North Metropolitan area, of which 171 are under way.
"We are using our partnerships with the Federal Government, our high value housing sales and our shared equity loan schemes to work towards our goal of 20,000 additional affordable housing dwellings by 2020," Mr Buswell said.
"This development is another example of what we are doing to help people move along the path between homelessness and home ownership."
A total of $550 million will be spent in Western Australia to build almost 2,000 new homes across Stages one and two of the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan.
Construction has commenced on 631 homes throughout WA, funded through the Federal and State governments' stimulus packages.
