Dr Phyllis Gardner is a tenured Professor of Medicine at Stanford University, as well as being on the board of Fellows of Harvard Medical School. She has trained in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.
After moving to Stanford in 1984, Dr Gardner was a scientific researcher, with experience in medicine, pharmacology and drug delivery systems. After ten years in academia, she became interested in entrepreneurship, founding several biopharma ventures.
She was principal scientist and head of research at ALZA Corporation from 1994 to 1998, and a partner of US venture capital life sciences firm Essex Woodlands Health Ventures from 1999 to 2015. She has also been a director on numerous boards of US public biotech firms including MiMedx Group and CohBar.
