Professor Peta Sanderson was educated at The University of Western Australia where she received undergraduate qualifications in Geology and Geomorphology, and her PhD in coastal process studies. During this time, she was a tutor at UWA and a sessional lecturer at Notre Dame between 1995 and 1997.

Subsequently, Prof Sanderson became assistant professor in Geography at the National University of Singapore before returning to University of Notre Dame in August 2000. Her research interests encompass coastal evolution, land-ocean interactions and environmental change. She has been involved in research on the rapidly changing environments of Sumatra, Indonesia, the coastal plains of Northern Australia and on the macrotidal coasts of the Kimberley.

Prof Sanderson has a passion for international education and a commitment to service and social justice issues both within Australia and internationally.
