Michael L'Estrange was head of the National Security College at the Australian National University from 2009 to 2015. Prior to that, he was secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for almost five years, and the Australian High Commissioner to the UK between 2000 and 2005. He served as Secretary to Cabinet and Head of the Cabinet Policy Unit from 1996 for more than four years and, prior to that, as executive director of the Menzies Research Centre.
He has been a non-executive director of Rio Tinto and a director of the University of Notre Dame, Australia since 2014.
Mr L'Estrange studied at the University of Sydney and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University where he graduated with a Master of Arts with First Class Honours.
