Jonathan Wyatt specialises in professional indemnity, directors' and officers' liability matters, as well as international and domestic shipping, and trade disputes.
Mr Wyatt advises on a broad range of shipping and trade matters including charter party and cargo disputes, sale of goods contracts and collisions. He also advises on indemnity and general liability, employment practices liability and property claims, and represents clients when cases proceed to litigation in the Federal Court of Australia and Supreme Court of Western Australia.
Mr Wyatt acted for clients in arbitrations in Australia, Hong Kong, England, China and Singapore. He works with national and international insurers and brokers in the professional indemnity, directors' and officers', property, public liability and marine practice areas, as well as with local and state governments, ship owners, charterers, ship brokers, ship-managers, exporters and freight forwarders.
Mr Wyatt has a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the University of Birmingham in England, and studied at the University of Sydney to re-qualify to practise in Australia. He is admitted to practice in England, Wales, Hong Kong and Australia. In 1998, he completed the Maritime Law Short Course at Southampton University.
Mr Wyatt was a partner in Sparke Helmore's Insurance Group from 2008-2012. He returned to Sparke Helmore as a partner in 2017 following a merger with Perth boutique law firm Jarman McKenna, where he was also a partner. Prior to Jarman McKenna, Mr Wyatt was a partner at DLA Phillips Fox (now DLA Piper) from 2003 to 2008, and worked in Hong Kong and London.
Mr Wyatt is a member of the Australian Insurance Law Association (AILA), Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand, Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance, and the British Insurance Law Association. He was president of the local AILA Committee.
