Emeritus Professor John Finlay-Jones has a background in clinical microbiology and immunology.
Prof Finlay-Jones was based at Flinders University for 25 years, including as Professor of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in the School of Medicine from 1997, and as head of the Faculty of Health Sciences from 1998 to 2003. He was a former assistant director of the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research in WA, and deputy vice chancellor (Research) at Edith Cowan University for a decade.
Prof Finlay-Jones also made a significant contribution in chairing and holding committee roles for several medical research organisations in Western Australia and nationally. He was appointed to the board of Perron Institute in February 2023 and chairs its Research Advisory Committee. Prof Finlay-Jones is also a pro bono mentor for Research Coaching Australia, and an external board member of the UWA Hockey Club.
In 2022, Professor Finlay-Jones chaired the independent selection committee for the Byron Kakulas Medal, and was appointed to the Institute’s Research Advisory Committee. In 2021, he was a member of the independent Scientific Review Panel for the Institute. Prof Finlay-Jones had also served on committees of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and the Australian National Council on AIDS, Hepatitis C and Related Diseases.
