Ian Johnson APM served as a commissioner at the Department of Corrective Services for 7 years. Mr Johnson was seconded to the Department of Justice in 2005 and appointed Corrective Services Commissioner in May 2006. He played a key role in implementing the recommendations of the Inquiry into the Management of Offenders in Custody and in the Community (the Mahoney report), which saw the establishment of the Department of Corrective Services. As Commissioner, Mr Johnson led improvements to prison infrastructure, intelligence systems and case management. He was also instrumental in enhancing the risk management of offenders; assessment and classification of prisoners; and the introduction of improved mechanisms for professionalism, ethics and integrity. Mr Johnson’s career in the Western Australian public sector began in 1976 with the WA Police where he served until 2005, taking up distinguished roles including as assistant commissioner of traffic and operations support and superintendent of strategic information management. In 2005, he was awarded the Australian Police Medal in recognition of his dedication and achievements during his time with the WA Police.
