Heather Brayford was the director general of the Department of Fisheries in April 2015. Following Machinery of Government changes in July 2017, she became deputy director general of sustainability and biosecurity within the Department of Primary industries and Regional Development.
Ms Brayford has more than 30 years of experience in public policy and management, with a focus on fisheries and aquaculture. Her experience covers areas of legislation and regulation, compliance, biosecurity, and broader natural resource management. Ms Brayford was also the executive director of fisheries in the Northern Territory and a past director of the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation. In 2022, she became the Director General of the Department of Primary Industries & Regional Development.
She holds a BSc, an MBA, and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
