Gerard King AM graduated in law from the University of Western Australia, then after articles with Sir John Lavan, was admitted as a solicitor in 1965. Mr King became a partner in the law firm Lavan & Walsh, and senior partner in 1978. In 1985, the firm became Phillips Fox Perth and is now Lavan Legal.
Mr King practised law in the areas of commercial contracting/property, banking/finance, revenue/tax, corporate and ASX compliance and mining law. He taught part-time at UWA law school for 5 years, joined the Taxation Institute, and the Australian Mining & Petroleum Lawyers Association, and served on the Law Society of WA and its committees.
Mr King was also involved in the management of his law firm from 1968 to 1991, and he retired in 1997. Mr King has been a director of several public listed companies including Australian Mining Investments from 1983 to 2002, and is currently chair of ASX listed Astron Limited.
Mr King was honorary chair of the St John Ambulance Board from 1987 to 1996, and an honorary chair of the WA St John Ambulance State Council which is the principal provider of ambulance services in WA.
In 2021, Mr King was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to first responder organisations, to child safety, and to the community.
