Denise Nicolay's career has been predominantly in the management of professional service firms and in particular accounting, business management and strategic planning. She spent a number of years at Parker and Parker Solicitors holding administration and management roles, and then spent ten years as general manager of Downing and Downing Solicitors. Ms Nicolay was a member of the Facilities Management Association and completed management courses at the AICD and the Financial Management Research Centre based at the University of New England. She has a range of generalist skills including accounting, human resources management, project planning and public speaking. Ms Nicolay was editor of the Erskine Grove Gazette, secretary of the Erskine Grove Branch, and chairs the Erskine Grove Resident Liaison Committee.
